VHF Radio - Short Range Certificate

A practical course and exam for anyone who uses or owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio either fixed or hand held.

To be able to operate the radio and know the procedures required to use the radio.

• Pre Course Study (This enables us to complete the course and exam in one day)

• Distress, urgency, safety and emergency assistance procedures
• Making routine radio calls
• Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using training radios
• Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
• Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
• Search and Rescue (SART)
• SRC Classroom Examination

How does it work?

2. We will send you a booking form to complete

3. We will add you as a user to the RYA Interactive portal and add you to the course (check your device is compatible here)

4. We will send you the address for the RYA Interactive portal, your login details and access to the RYA VHF eBook

5. Once the course is complete, you can contact us to book into one of our exam evenings

Classroom Based Course

How does it work?

1. Book through our Course Calendar

2. We will send you a booking form to complete

3. We will send you details for an VHF interactive eBook or send you a paperback VHF course book

4. You can complete the pre-course study then attend the course at Keyhaven

5. We will arrange for an examiner to come in on the evening of the course and deliver your exam

SRC Classroom Exam £70 (Payment through the RYA and available at any centre)
