Water and Saltmarshes

What do I need to bring on a course?

We provide high specification comfortable lifejackets (the same type our instructors use every day) for all those on our courses. We ask that you consider the weather when packing your kit, but please try to prepare for poor weather, as conditions can change quickly. The following items are essential:

  • Layers of clothing to keep warm
  • Sturdy trainers or boots (waterproof is good, but no flip flops or sandals)
  • Pencil and paper
  • Packed lunch (the nearest shop is a 5 minute drive down the road in Milford-on-Sea)
  • A positive, can-do attitude!

These items are weather dependent:

  • Waterproof jacket
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Sun hat/woolly hat
  • Gloves
  • Sunscreen

We can provide wet weather gear, but please let us know if you are outside the S-M-L-XL bracket!

  • TV and radio broadcasts
  • Newspapers
  • Harbour offices
  • RNLI Noticeboards

Tides:

  • Apps and websites such as My Tide Times, Hampshire Tides and BBC Tides are good.
  • Harbour offices
  • RNLI Noticeboards

Poor Weather

As Alfred Wainwright said, 'There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing'. If the weather is wet, the course will still go ahead - please bring appropriate warm, waterproof clothing. If the weather is extremely windy, we may need to cancel or postpone the course; if this happens, we will give you as much notice as possible, and make judgement calls early if the forecast is obviously poor.

Cancellations

If the course needs to be postponed due to adverse weather conditions, a mutually convenient time will be agreed to rearrange the course. Otherwise, cancellations will be handled as follows:

• More than 21 days prior to the training date: full refund, minus a £10 administrative fee

• 21 to 10 days prior to the training date: 50% refund

• Less than 10 days prior to training date: no refund

To cancel, please email info@westsolentseaschool.co.uk

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@westsolentseaschool.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

To gain this you will need to have attained your Powerboat Level 2 certificate...

Then you will need to join the RYA - details here

Then you just need to apply online FOR FREE using this link.

Some courses are internationally recognised, so students need to be at a certain level of practical and theory knowledge by the end of those courses, or they may not receive a certificate. However, the instructor can continue to ask questions to ascertain an answer or allow the student multiple attempts at a manoeuvre they might be finding tricky. If, for example, during a Powerboat Level 2 course, the student is well below the level required, but has covered enough content to be awarded a Powerboat Level 1 certificate, that can be an alternative.

We are a friendly, small company, and operate in a beautiful location. We offer competitive pricing and very knowledgeable, professional instructors. We enjoy working amongst saltgrass and samphire rather than chimneys and traffic.

We hope you've enjoyed your course with us! If you would like to leave us some positive feedback, we'd love to hear via either Google, here, or via Facebook, here.

We aim to deliver high quality powerboat training with knowledgeable instructors at a good rate. If we have fallen below your expectations, please email us to let us know by emailing info@westsolentseaschool.co.uk and we will aim to address the issue as soon as we can.

For good food:

The Haven (Lym) is located within a marina, and should have some good fish on the menu: https://www.havenrestaurant.co.uk/

The Gun (Keyhaven) is very good: https://www.theguninn.co.uk/

All of our courses involve spending most of each day outside in the fresh air. You don't need to take a Lateral Flow Test before coming on a course, but if you do, please let us know ASAP if you test positive. In line with government guidelines, the fresh air should be sufficient to keep Covid-19 at bay, but if you would like to wear a mask during any aspect of a course, feel free to do so.
