Own Boat - RYA Level 2 - Powerboat Handling

Course Information

This course provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. The course will be mostly practical-based and take place in our 5.6m RIB.


Objective

The recipient of a Level 2 Powerboat Handling certificate will be a self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of their own limitations and those of the craft. They will understand the key principles of powerboating and implement them to good effect.

£290 per person


*VHF Radio Course is just £99 when you book within 2 months of your PBL2 Course*


Items required for own vessel tuition:

• Seaworthy boat smaller than 10m LOA

• Copy of insurance - boat / public liability / personal (you will need to confirm to us in writing that your insurance policy covers one of our instructors driving your boat)

• Alternative means of propulsion (i.e. paddles) 

• Anchor, chain & warp (rope) 

• Bucket or bailer 

• Full fuel tank

• Spare killcord 


Recommended items that can be supplied by us:

• First aid kit 

• Fire extinguisher (in date)

• Flares (in date - 2 x orange smoke and 2 x red handheld) 

• Fenders 

• Tow line 

• Throw line 

• Knife 

• VHF radio / Mobile phone 

• Survival bag or Thermal protective aid x 1 

• Fog horn (gas or manual) 

• Compass (fixed or handheld) 

• Chart plotter or GPS or Navionics

• Lifejackets 


If you do not own some of the items above, it is advisable for your future boating to invest in many of them. We can advise on which would be best to prioritise depending on your boating plans.

Timings: 9am - 5pm

Experience: None required (L1 is useful)

Age: 12+

Instructor Ratio: 1:3 maximum

The ICC (or to give it its full title International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft) is a certificate which is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in foreign countries. It was historically known as the International Certificate of Competence. An ICC can be gained through the RYA by successfully completing a Powerboat Level 2 course. The ICC is free to all RYA members.
